This will take place in Wilson Hall, room 168. Dr. Margaret Haggerman is the Assistant Professor of Sociology at Mississippi State University and will be presenting the book "White Kids: Growing Up with Privilege in a Racially Divided Society." Dr. Margaret Hagerman, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Mississippi State University, will present a public lecture based on her recently published book, White Kids: Growing Up with Privilege in a Racially Divided America (NYU Press). In this book she uses ethnography to explore how white children learn about race in the context of their everyday lives. It was the winner of the 2019 William J. Goode Book Award awarded by the American Sociological Association’s Section on Family and was a finalist for the 2019 C. Wright Mills Book Award given by The Society for the Study of Social Problems. A pre-event reception will be offered at 5 PM. The lecture begins at 5:30 PM. This event is sponsored by the UAH Department of Sociology as part of the UAH Distinguished Speaker Series 2019-2020.
