turnitinTo improve security & performance, Turnitin has updated the its LTI integration that connects their tool to Canvas from version 1.1 to version 1.3. This change, which will go into effect between the summer and fall terms, will impact all courses that use the Turnitin LTI integration. Because of this update, the way you create your Turnitin assignments this fall may change.

How do I know if this change will effect my assignments?

There are two Turnitin integrations available at UAH:

  • Canvas Plagiarism Framework (NO ACTION REQUIRED) - This integration type works with Canvas assignment features like group assignments and peer review. It does not support Turnitin's advanced grading features or PeerMark.
  • Turnitin LTI (ACTION REQUIRED) - Leverages Turnitin's grading features (like QuickMarks and rubrics) as well as Turnitin's peer review tool, PeerMark.

If you use Turnitin, you use one of these methods to connect Turnitin to your course. Not sure which integration you use? Refer to this helpful guide to determine your integration type.

I use the Canvas Plagairism Framework integration. Does that mean I can disregard this announcement?
Yes. Assignments created using the Canvas Plagairism Framework integration will be unaffected by the update. No action is required.
I use the Turnitin LTI. Do I need to take action?

Yes. Assignments that use the Turnitin LTI 1.1 integration will not work properly in Fall 2024.

I use the Turnitin LTI. What do I need to do?

If you are building new assignments from scratch, follow Turnitin's instructions to create LTI 1.3 assignments. If you are reusing course content copied from a previous term, you must remove any old LTI 1.1 assignments in your Fall 2024 courses and recreate them as LTI 1.3 assignments. For more information, refer to Turnitin's LTI 1.3 tutorials for instructions on how to create assignments, copy previous assignments, manage assignment settings, etc.

I'm not sure if I have updated things correctly. Can I speak to someone about this change?

Absolutely. Contact helpdesk@uah.edu if you have any questions about this update.
