Xavier Martin, a native of York, England, is making a significant impact at The University of Alabama in Huntsville while balancing a demanding schedule. A full-time finance student, Martin maintains a 4.0 GPA, is a six-time President’s List honoree and was named scholar-athlete of the year. He is also a member of the UAH men’s soccer team and is known for his kindness, discipline and determination.
In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, Martin is deeply involved on and off campus. He serves as a finance Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) leader, works as a data entry administrator for KN Engineering Solutions, chairs the exhibitor committee for the Alabama Science Festival and participates in student organizations, including the Financial Management Association and the Economics Association.
“I have gained experience through multiple roles that have helped me grow personally and allowed me to contribute to the lives of others,” Martin said.
After moving more than 4,000 miles from home, Martin said building relationships was essential to his success in the United States.
“The faculty and staff are so incredible,” he said. “They’re always willing to help.”
Faculty and staff said they have been equally impressed with Martin’s work ethic and character.
“Xavier is such a kind and respectful young man,” said academic adviser Cheyanne Whitten. “It is impressive to see how involved he is as an international student-athlete.”
Assistant finance professor Dr. Nicholas Clarke praised Martin’s time management and commitment to excellence.
Since arriving at UAH, Martin said one of his biggest challenges has been balancing academics, athletics and responsibilities while being far from family. Over time, he has developed the skills to manage it all.
“Being able to balance academic excellence, mentoring students, leading events and participating in athletics is something I am immensely proud of,” he said.
Martin’s academic success inspired him to support other students. As a PASS leader, he leads weekly study sessions, helping classmates better understand course material and build confidence.
“Watching them succeed through their own work, but knowing I helped along the way, is incredible,” he said.
Martin said involvement has been key to his college experience. Through campus events and student organizations, he has formed meaningful connections and stepped outside his comfort zone.
“I’ve learned so much more about myself just by getting involved and meeting new people,” he said.
Outside the classroom, Martin contributes to the community through his work with KN Engineering Solutions and his leadership role with the Alabama Science Festival, where he helps create engaging experiences for children and families.
Despite his busy schedule, Martin remains closely connected to his family in York, speaking with them regularly. He credits their support for helping him succeed.
“My family did so much to help me get here and become the person I am today,” he said. “Moving here is the best decision I’ve ever made.”
