October 7, 2019 The Office of the Provost and the Honors College are pleased to announce the Honors Faculty Fellow Program. Faculty Fellows are common elements of mature Honors Colleges. The program allows for closer connections between faculty and Honors students, builds knowledge about the Honors College among faculty at large, and offers unique teaching opportunities to interested and eligible faculty. Applications to become an Honors Faculty Fellow are open now and will close November 11, 2019. Honors Faculty Fellows Honors Faculty Fellows serve a term of one academic year (fall-spring), renewable for one additional year. Faculty Fellows are expected to teach one section of HON 101 in the fall (1 credit hour). In either spring or fall, they are also required to teach either a 1 credit hour Honors Seminar (HON 301) or a 3-hour Honors seminar (HON 399) on topics of their choosing. Ideally, they would teach one additional Honors course in their discipline during the academic year, if scheduling, load, and curriculum permits. (Note: some departments do not have self-standing Honors courses.) For the total academic year, Fellows are expected to teach between 2-4 hours in Honors (courses bearing the HON designation) and potentially 3-4 hours in Honors sections of courses in their home discipline. Teaching responsibilities are coordinated among the Honors Dean, the Fellow’s Department Chair, and the Fellow’s College Dean. A Faculty Fellow may be given additional service duties depending on their strengths and the needs of the Honors College (for example, recruiting, mentoring of students, developing courses or other programs). All Fellows are expected to do some academic programming outside the classroom (for example, lectures, discussions, or reading groups). Faculty Fellows are still expected to perform duties and fulfill obligations to their home department, although their exact responsibilities to Honors and their Home department are to be negotiated between the Fellow, the Fellow’s Chair and Dean, and the Honors Dean. The Faculty Fellow award is a $2,000 stipend to the Faculty Fellow, and a flat rate of $4200 to the Fellow’s department for the entire academic year. The stipend will be paid into the faculty’s professional development account. Additionally, Fellows are paid the standard FYE rate for teaching HON 101. The Honors College seeks two Fellows for this coming year. For the past two years, Dr. Paul Collopy of ISEEM, and Dr. Rolf Goebel, Distinguished Professor in WLC, have served as Fellows. Qualifications: Faculty Fellows must be either tenured or in the Clinical or Lecturer track. Faculty working toward tenure cannot serve as Fellows until they have been granted tenure. Faculty Fellows must have a record of excellence in either teaching or research and preferably both. Evidence of support for Honors, either through teaching Honors courses, directing Honors Theses, or mentoring Honors Students, is strongly preferred but not required. Selection Procedure In fall term of the year preceding the Fellows’ terms, the Provost and the Dean of the Honors College announce the program and request applications. Fellows may be nominated either by their Chair, their Dean, or they may self-nominate. Potential Fellows develop an application packet consisting of (1) a short (2-3 page) CV, (2) a one-page statement about the faculty member’s commitment to Honors, goals as a Faculty Fellow, and potential teaching options, (3) a letter from the Department Chair (or College Dean, if necessary) stating that the faculty member is available to work as a Faculty Fellow in the subsequent year. Applications are forwarded electronically to the Honors Dean (wilkerw@uah.edu), who then forwards the packets to the Honors Council Executive Committee (the representatives of academic colleges who serve on the Honors Council). The Honors Council Executive Committee makes recommendations to the Honors Dean, who then consults with the Honors Council and decides which Fellows’ names to forward to the Provost. (If a member of the Honors Council is nominated, that person must recuse himself or herself from the Honors Council for purposes of application review.) The Provost appoints and announces the Faculty Fellows.
