Metal Madness Docket: UAH-P-14004 Technology Current instrumentation for testing material properties, such as stress, fatigue, and bending, is often expensive, bulky, or limited to a single type of measurement. This is particularly inconvenient in laboratory settings where portable and flexible equipment is a priority. Researchers at UAH have developed a rotational bending fatigue machine and three-point bending machine combined into one. This two-in-one apparatus, called Metal Madness, is able to demonstrate the difference between metals and non-metals under fatigue stress and show how metals and non-metals bend and flex under force. The three-point bending machine can bend a variety of metals: aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, titanium, ceramic, and more. The rotational bending fatigue machine can apply force to a testing specimen and eventually fatigue and break the specimen. It can also measure the load applied and the number of rotations before the testing specimen breaks. In addition to its versatility, Metal Madness is also lightweight and portable. Applications Research institutions School/college laboratories Material manufacturers Medical device and equipment testing Advantages Multiple functions in one machine 100% mechanical – no external power source required Minimal maintenance Portable Can be modified to take digital measurements Easy to operate Cost efficient Safe and reliable Status State of Development: Proof of concept Licensing Status: Available for licensing Patent Status: Patented
