Most people would not relish the idea of spending the summer in a 150-year-old house with no air conditioning. But for Jessica Brodt, it's the opportunity of a lifetime. That's because the master's student in history at UAH is currently serving as an architectural and conservation restoration intern at the historic Lyndhurst. "I've been living in the Greenhouse Service Building, which is adjacent to the mansion on the property," says the Toney, Ala., native. "Entrepreneurship is my passion; it gives the business world character," said Heather Boozer, Small Business Counselor, at UAH Small Business Development Center (SBDC). "Without entrepreneurs, the business world would lack innovation, growth, and culture. I encourage entrepreneurship because a ceiling is non-existent and that provides endless possibilities." Boozer, the newest member of the SBDC Huntsville team, was hired last January as the Small Business Counselor. Her duties include assisting small businesses with start up, business plan development, licensing, marketing and social media, management assistance, business health analysis, accounting and finance analysis, human resources, and focusing on access to capital. With its location in the Tennessee Valley, UAH typically enjoys mild winters. But it was snowing the day Christian Bailey came to tour campus as a high school student trying to decide where to go. "The weather was terrible," says the Arab, Ala., native, "and yet the tour guide - dressed in a t-shirt and shorts - still wanted to show off the school. That was my first impression." Donna M. Lamp is a recipient of the 2016 Staff Excellence Award. Lamp began working at UAH in 2009, as Staff Assistant in Communication Arts (CA) and World Languages and Cultures (WLC - formerly Foreign Languages and Literatures ) in the College of Arts Humanities, and Social Sciences (formerly College of Liberal Arts). At the time, both academic divisions were combined into one large department. Two years later, CA and WLC were divided into two departments and Lamp remained as staff assistant for both areas. ...
