Internal Call for Applications and Nominations

Interim Dean of the Graduate School

Background:  The position of Associate Provost for International Services and Academic Integrity, and Dean of the Graduate School is being disaggregated into functionally distinct roles better aligned with each area's mission. International Services and Study Abroad will move to Enrollment Management, and administration of Academic Integrity will move to the Dean of Students office. The Graduate School will become a standalone dean-led unit reporting directly to the Provost.

To provide continuity of leadership while a national search for the permanent Dean of the Graduate School is conducted, the Provost is seeking applications from and nominations of qualified internal candidates for the role of Interim Dean of the Graduate School.

Position Summary:  The Interim Dean of the Graduate School provides leadership and day-to-day administration of the Graduate School, reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Interim Dean is responsible for maintaining continuity of current graduate education initiatives and operations during the transition to standalone leadership, and for representing the Graduate School to internal and external constituencies during the interim period.

  • Anticipated duration: through the conclusion of the national search for the permanent Dean of the Graduate School, currently estimated to be June 2027
  • Administrative reassigned time: 50-75%
  • Interim status does not preclude candidacy in the subsequent national search for the permanent position

Responsibilities:

  • Administer graduate certificates, interdisciplinary programs, professional master's programs, research-based master's and Ph.D. programs, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program
  • Maintain continuity of ongoing Graduate School initiatives
  • Manage operations, compliance, and fiscal administration of the Graduate School during the interim period
  • Monitor and record students’ academic progress and milestones (residency, qualifying examinations, candidacy, defense of dissertation), and the awarding of degrees
  • Work closely with the Graduate Council to develop and oversee policies and procedures for graduate education, including program and course approvals
  • Serve as an advocate for graduate students and graduate faculty, and represent the Graduate School's mission and priorities to college deans, chairs, faculty, and external constituencies
  • Assist graduate program directors with decisions on waiver requests, appeals, extension of time requests, etc.
  • Supervise allocation of tuition scholarships for graduate teaching assistantship to the academic colleges
  • Collaborate with Graduate Admissions to strengthen and expand the recruitment of high-quality graduate students

Desired Qualifications:

  • A tenured member of the UAH faculty in good standing, with academic administrative experience at the department, program, or college level
  • Familiarity with graduate education administration, preferably including experience with research-based graduate programs
  • A strong record of collaborative work with deans, chairs, faculty, and students across multiple colleges
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage ongoing initiatives without disruption during a leadership transition
  • Willingness and availability to serve for the anticipated duration of the interim term, including during the concurrent national search process

How to Apply or Nominate:  Internal candidates should submit a brief letter of interest addressing the position’s responsibilities and desired qualifications, and current curriculum vitae to provost@uah.edu.

Nominations of qualified colleagues are also welcome and should be directed to the same address.

For questions about the role or the process, please contact Dave Puleo at provost@uah.edu.

Applications and nominations will be accepted through August 3. The Provost anticipates announcing the interim appointment by August 17.
