At UIUC, he made the first pixelated thin film micropolarizer array. The work stimulated and enabled the later development of the multi-billion dollar 3D display industry. After graduation from UIUC, he joined the Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, California as a research scientist and later moved to the Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico as a member of technical staff. He also held a research scholar appointment with the Fitzpatrick Center for Photonics at the Duke University. He joined the faculty of the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2005. Now he is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and a Professor of Optical Science and Engineering. Prof. Guo is the inventor of the surface plasmon resonance spectrometer sensor and the inventor of hybrid metal-dielectric low loss surface plasmon waveguides. He received the Alan Berman Research Publication Award in 2013, the ASEE- Naval Research Office Summer Faculty Fellowship, and the ASEE-Air Force Office of Scientific Research Summer Faculty Fellowship in 2010. He was the only recipient of the University Distinguished Faculty Research Award in 2016 and one of two recipients of the Outstanding Engineering Faculty Research Award of UAH in 2016. He was also the only recipient of the College of Engineering Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in 2007. Prof. Guo is a Fellow of SPIE-the International Society for Optics and Photonics. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of OSA Journal of Photonics Research, and also serves as an Associate Editor of SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics.
