graphic design mac lab class

The Graphic Design program at The University of Alabama in Huntsville prepares students to create thoughtful, effective design across print, digital, and interactive media. The program offers coursework in typography, branding, print and publication design, web design, UI/UX design, motion graphics, and illustration.

The program begins with a strong foundation in art and design, followed by courses across the major areas of graphic design that build a broad understanding of the field. In upper-level courses, each student focuses on the areas of greatest interest and builds a portfolio around individual strengths.

Across the curriculum, projects follow the methods and professional practices used in the industry today. Students learn to research their audiences, understand how people interact with design, and test their ideas before refining them. This user-centered approach applies across a range of projects, from printed publications and brand identities to digital experiences.

A dedicated graphic design lab provides iMacs and the professional tools needed in the field. The lab is open to graphic design majors 24/7, so work can continue outside of class.

UAH offers two degree paths in graphic design:
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design
  • Bachelor of Arts in Art.

The BFA requires more studio coursework and admission through a junior-year portfolio review. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accredits the BFA, which is the preferred degree for those planning to pursue a Master of Fine Arts. The BA includes a minor in another field, allowing you to pair design with marketing, communication, computer science, or another interest.

Both paths conclude with preparation for professional practice. Graduates leave the program with a professional portfolio website, complete application materials, and the skills to enter the design profession, whether at an agency, on an in-house creative team, or as independent designers.
