Biography

Bassoonist Taylor Smith is a dynamic orchestral, opera, and chamber musician who resides in Birmingham, Alabama. He serves as Assistant Principal/Second Bassoon of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and os also Principal Bassoon of both the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and the Missouri Symphony. Taylor’s versatile artistry has brought him to the stage with distinguished ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, New Haven Symphony, and Imani Winds, performing under celebrated conductors including Jaap van Zweden, JoAnn Falletta, Alan Gilbert, and Kurt Masur.

A native of Fulton, Missouri, Taylor holds a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance and musicology from the University of Kansas, a master’s degree in orchestral performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and a professional studies diploma from the Mannes School of Music. Known for his warm tone and expressive musicianship he brings a distinctive voice to a broad spectrum of repertoire.

In addition to his performing career, Taylor is an avid long-distance runner and can often be spotted parading through city parks with his spirited toy poodle in tow.
