Biography

Dr. C. David Ragsdale is Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Ragsdale teaches courses in music education and conducting. In 2015, Dr. Ragsdale was named the UAH College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Professor of the Year.

In demand as a clinician and conductor, Dr. Ragsdale has conducted numerous all-state and district honor bands, as well as recent university conducting engagements at Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Winthrop University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Georgia. Additionally, he has led a diverse array of performers in orchestral settings, including Grammy winners Wynonna Judd, Lee Greenwood and Indigo Girls, American Idol Ruben Studdard, newgrass band Act of Congress, and Broadway star Ivan Rutherford. He is a frequent contributor to the “Teaching Music Through Performance” textbook series and his research on Stravinsky’s neoclassic era was twice selected for presentation at the College Band Directors National Association. For eight seasons, he served on the conducting staff of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and is in his tenth season as conductor of the Festival Wind Ensemble and Orchestra of the Tennessee Valley Music Festival.

Prior to UAH, Dr. Ragsdale served as Associate Director of Bands and Director of the internationally acclaimed “Band of the Hour” marching band for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami, where he was also inducted into the Iron Arrow Society, the highest honor attainable at the University of Miami for students, faculty, or alumni.

Prior to UAH, Dr. Ragsdale served as the Associate Director of Bands for the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he directed the internationally-acclaimed "Band of the Hour" Marching Band for the Miami Hurricanes. In 2004, Dr. Ragsdale was inducted into the Iron Arrow Society, the highest honor attainable at the University of Miami by any student, faculty member, or alumnus.
