A free lecture on October 28 will offer insights into the relations between two nations that are now at war.

“Ukraine & Russia: Nationalism, Empire & War” will be presented at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a part of the University of Alabama system, by Molly Wilkinson Johnson, PhD, associate professor of history at UAH.

Offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UAH (OLLI at UAH), the event will begin at 11 am in Wilson Hall Theatre. It will also broadcast live via Zoom. Attendance is free and open to the public — Sign-up is required.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Johnson speak to us at OLLI at UAH on such a timely and relevant topic. We are also delighted to offer this lecture to the general public to demonstrate the quality of programs we offer to our members,” says Clay Williams, program manager for OLLI at UAH.

The lecture will discuss the complex history between Ukraine and Russia from the 19th century to the present. It will explore the geopolitical and cultural goals of the Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet Russian empires, as well as the emergence of Ukrainian nationalism and the development of the Ukrainian nation-state.
