The successful completion of the college journey is earning a degree, but unexpected financial needs can put that success at risk. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Business wanted to do its part in supporting students’ financial needs in their last mile and raised nearly $16K.

Dr. Jason Greene, Dean of the UAH College of Business, challenged the college to invest in student success by donating to the Last-Mile Fund. With 100 percent of faculty and staff donating to the fund, the College of Business raised nearly $16K.

"Our faculty and staff are tremendously dedicated to our students, and their support of this fund is further evidence of that," said Greene. He added, "We have seen these students work hard toward their degrees only for some to encounter financial barriers as they get close to the finish line. We want to help them in this last mile to earn their UAH degrees."

Faculty and staff participating in the challenge were allowed to direct their Last-Mile Fund gift to the UAH college of their choice.

Jennifer Brost, UAH Development Officer, mentioned that "Each UAH college has its own Last-Mile Fund and we hope to see this type of success campus-wide."

Introduced to campus earlier this year, the Last-Mile Fund honors the university’s 50th anniversary.

"The Last-Mile Fund will be launched to the community in mid-September and we hope that alumni, friends, and corporations will make a gift to this worthwhile fund," said Brost.

Funds are disbursed to eligible upper-level, degree-seeking, undergraduate students who have completed the annual UAH Scholarship Application and whose unmet financial need related to his or her academic expenses is the sole barrier to their successful graduation from UAH. Preference is given to seniors who have demonstrated satisfactory progress toward graduation and whose financial status reflects the greatest need.
