Sustainability in Practice

What is "sustainability" in your own words?

Sustainability is the knowledge that resources won't last forever, and the urge to do something about it. Sustainability is making a world a better place for the people after you.

What role do you feel sustainability plays in your life, both now and in the future?

Sustainability plays a role in my current life by prompting me to ask questions. What does a plastic free grocery trip look like? Will my grandchildren be able to play in the same clean river I did growing up? Should I grow my own loofahs? Is reducing my waste even significant? And most importantly: "what can I do to make the world a better place?" In the future, I will hopefully work a job that literally leaves the earth better than when I found it. I will still be asking questions, and hopefully I will have some answers to them.

What does a "Sustainable UAH" look like?

Ideally, a sustainable UAH would incorporate renewable energy to power the facilities and ways to eliminate plastic from campus restaurants. It would have composting, consistent recycling in all of the dorms, more hand dryers and less paper towels, and they would print their t-shirts from local businesses. Most importantly, it would contain students and faculty pursuing more sustainable practices.

In what ways can UAH improve in its pursuit of sustainability?

Budget. New technology, new practices, new training can all be added, but at a cost. In addition, faculty and administrative "higher-ups" can listen, and approve new policies or practices for the school.
