What is FWS and how does it differ from regular student employment?
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally funded, need-based program that provides students with part-time employment. Eligibility is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA and is based on the federal need analysis report. FWS is available to UAH undergraduates with financial need who are enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student's course of study. Regular student employment is funded directly out of the hiring department’s budget.
How do I take advantage of FWS in my department?
Each spring (May–June), the Office of Student Affairs circulates a survey to directors and department heads to assess Federal Work-Study (FWS) needs. To be considered for the upcoming academic year, each department must submit a request during this window. Notifications regarding approved student allocations will be sent by the end of summer. Once approved, departments may hire eligible students using their FWS award to fund their wages. Contact the office for Student Employment at chargerstudentemployment@uah.edu if you need to be added to the list of contacts receiving the survey.
How do I know if a student is eligible for FWS?
To confirm a student’s academic and financial aid eligibility, email chargerstudentemployment@uah.edu with the student's full name and A#. To qualify for FWS, a student must have a completed FAFSA on file and meet all Financial Aid and academic requirements.
Spring Semester is coming to a close, what do I do?
A termination ePAF must be completed for each FWS student immediately upon termination, or on the last day of spring finals, whichever comes first. If you wish to continue employment over summer break, you must verify their academic eligibility and submit a new ePAF with department funding.
Who is responsible for monitoring how many hours students work and their on-going eligibility?
It is the responsibility of the hiring department to monitor hours worked and to ensure students do not exceed the maximum allowed of 29 hours per week. It is also the responsibility of the department to monitor enrollment and GPA requirements to ensure on-going eligibility.
What happens when a student exceeds their available aid?
The hiring department will be notified if a student’s FWS allocation is exceeded. If this happens, the department will be required to reimburse Financial Aid for the overage.
What is the eligibility window for FWS?
FWS funding covers the first day of fall classes through the last day of spring finals.
Can a student’s FWS status change?
Yes, certain situations may alter a student’s FWS status, such as newly applied loans or scholarships.
