Charging into the Semester? Don't Forget FERPA!

Privacy is our priority. Always protect student records.

Welcome back, Chargers! As the new academic year kicks off, it's a great time to refresh our commitment to protecting student privacy.

A quick reminder:
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), along with the University’s 03.01.01 Student Records Policy and 06.01.01 Protection of Data Policy, governs the privacy and handling of student educational records. Whether you're handling grades, class schedules, advising information, or any other personally identifiable information (PII), it’s essential to handle student data responsibly and securely. Always think privacy first.

Key points to remember:

  • Do not disclose information contained in student education records without proper authorization.
  • Avoid sending PII via email when possible. If it cannot be avoided, be sure to use encrypted, password-protected files.
  • Avoid discussing student records in public or unsecured spaces.
  • If you're unsure, verify with your supervisor before you share information.

Let’s stay Charger strong—and FERPA compliant!
