Evelyn Jones, a Sociology and Theatre double major, interned in Spring 2024 at Little Forest Mountain School. In their own words, Evelyn Jones graciously shared their internship experience, emphasizing how their education in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences contributed to their success.
About the internship:
Hi, I am Evelyn Jones and I did my internship at Little Mountain Forest School. This is an entirely outdoor school for kids ages 3-10 on Monte Sano. I have gotten to work and engage with some very curious thinkers. I have observed the advantages of an outdoor education for preschool students. It has been an amazing experience!
How my CAHS education helped:
CAHS has spent the last 4 years preparing me for my internship, and I feel that they truly did the best for me. I have been able to use information from so many of my classes to expand my knowledge through my internship. Without CAHS I would not have had the opportunities that taught me so much. Huge thank you to CAHS and LMFS for supporting me!
About Little Mountain Forest School:
The organization’s website states, “We allow the child’s interest to drive the curriculum as they move through the rhythm of the day. Our educators are present to support this process, which is often referred to as an emergent curriculum. Our time outdoors is child-led, not adult-directed. Play is one of the main ways children learn and develop, which is why child-led play is a focus of our program!”
About the Sociology Major:
The sociology curriculum is designed to give students greater insight into the cultural and social systems that everyone interacts with on a daily basis, with courses touching on everything from social stratification and environmental justice to deviance and family. The sociology major also offers opportunities for real-world experience through internships, research, and conferences. Students graduate with a versatile skill set that includes communicating complex abstract ideas, analyzing statistical information, and thinking critically about how to solve problems and effect social change. Find out more about the sociology major on their website.
About the Theatre Major:
Merge academic interests and artistic passions with a degree in theatre from UAH. They have several areas of specialization: Film & Media Arts, Performance, and Technical Theatre & Design. Each is designed to prepare students for a smooth transition into the world of professional theatre & film. Find out more about the theatre major on their website.
