Biography

Prof. Junpeng Guo received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Currently, he is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and a Professor of Optical Science and Engineering at University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Before joining UAH, he worked as a member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico and a research scientist in Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, California. Dr. Guo also held a research scholar appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Duke University. At Sandia National Laboratories, his team pioneered the development of the low-loss silicon-nitride optical waveguide and practical silicon-based lightwave circuits. His team first worked on silicon-nitride waveguide micro-ring resonators for ultra-high sensitivity biosensors. Prof. Guo is the inventor of the localized surface plasmon resonance spectrometer sensor, a new device combining the functions of sensing and spectral analysis together. He is also the inventor of the metal-dielectric low loss surface plasmon waveguide. Prof. Guo received the Alan Berman Research Publication Award in 2013, the ASEE- Naval Research Office Summer Faculty Fellowship, and the ASEE-Air Force Office of Scientific Research Summer Faculty Fellowship in 2010. He was the sole recipient of the University Distinguished Faculty Research Award in 2016, and one of two recipients of the Outstanding Engineering Faculty Research Award of his university in 2016. Prof. Guo served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanophotonics and Photonics Research. Currently, he is an Associate Editor of Optics Express. Prof. Guo is a Fellow of SPIE-the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
