Celebrating Value and Talent National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Each October, The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) joins institutions nationwide in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This annual observance celebrates the contributions, talent, and varied perspectives that individuals with disabilities bring to higher education and the American workforce.

First established by Congress in 1945 as a weeklong recognition of World War II veterans with physical disabilities, the national commemoration expanded in 1988 into NDEAM. The initiative evolved to advocate for accessible employment opportunities for all individuals. Today, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) oversees the national observance and its annual theme.

This year’s theme, "Celebrating Value and Talent," emphasizes the shared focus on creating equitable environments.

Commitment to Accessibility

Central to UAH's mission is creating an environment where every member of our campus community can thrive. In recognition of NDEAM, we celebrate the unique contributions of individuals with disabilities across UAH and reaffirm our commitment to campuswide accessibility.
