The UAH Distinguished Lecture Series is proud to announce a lecture to be given by Dr. Don Morgan.

Dr. Morgan is a Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and Founder and Director of the MTSU Center for Physical Activity and Health in Youth over the past decade,

Dr. Morgan’s research and public health promotion efforts have focused on enhancing mobility and physical function in persons with disabilities and increasing activity and fitness levels of Tennessee youth. Recent findings from his laboratory have shown that walking capacity, walking performance, and physical function can improve in individuals with cerebral palsy, type 2 diabetes, and spinal cord injury following underwater treadmill training (UTT) or UTT that is supplemented by over-ground walk training. An innovative water-based gait therapy, UTT positively addresses constraints and limitations of treadmill walking programs which incorporate partial body weight support training and appears to be more successful in improving walking activity compared to current land-based unweighting systems.

The ultimate objective in this work is to extend the access of underwater treadmill training, a technologically-advanced therapy option with potential disease-modifying effects, beyond the research laboratory and into a variety of clinical and public settings through the use of smaller, mobile, and commercially-available underwater treadmills.
