AIA Spring 2024 Lecture Series: Dr. Dennis Geronimus, Department of Art History, New York University

Producing art of extraordinary emotional immediacy at a time of social, religious, and political anxiety and upheaval, Jacopo da Pontormo (1494–1557) is an artist for our time. A virtuoso draftsman who tirelessly studied the expressive potential of the human body, Pontormo reimagined stories sacred and profane in ways that were as deeply moving as they were uncanny. His dynamic forms and brilliant color combinations continue to spellbind audiences today as they did church goers and palace dwellers of Renaissance Florence. More specifically, the present talk will address Pontormo’s ways of working, privileging restless experimentation in material and method. An intimate look inside the artist’s studio tells us a great deal about Pontormo’s practice: revealing the effort, stamina, and labor behind his heavenly visions.

Free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the North Alabama Society of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).
