UAH Programs in Technical Writing

Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication
The English Department offers a fifteen-hour program open to graduate students from any major. The Certificate may be earned on its own or in association with a master's degree. All Certificate courses count toward the master's in English.

Undergraduate Studies
Option 1 - the English Department offers an undergraduate program called a cognate (similar to a minor) in technical writing.
Options 2 & 3 - the Communication Arts Department offers a technical communication track in both their major and minor.

In all of the undergraduate programs, students take
  • CM/EH 301 Technical Writing
    • Introduces techniques of technical writing and develops skills in writing proposals, progress reports, correspondence, and manuals or technical reports. Offered every semester. Requires junior or senior status. This course may also count as an elective in an English major.
  • CM/EH 302 Technical Editing
    • Builds on technical writing skills, focusing on marking and revising texts written by others. Offered spring semester only.

      Prerequisite: CM/EH 301 or permission of instructor. This course may also count as an elective in an English major.
  • CM/EH 320 Practicum in Writing
    • Earns academic credit for an apprenticeship. Students work part-time with practicing writers and editors at such local companies. Offered every semester. Requires advance planning to set up a company sponsor. Prerequisites: CM/EH 301-302.
