The College of Engineering at UAH is very pleased to announce the rollout of the first offering of Chemical Engineering: Review of Enabling Sciences through Problem Solving.  This is the first MOOC course that has been developed in-house through seed funding provided by the College of Engineering at UAH. This 9 week online course will be taught by Dr. Krishnan Chittur, Professor in the Chemical & Materials Engineering Department at UAH. Professor Chittur has more than 25 years research experience working on problems at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and biology. His current interest is in understanding gene expression and developing techniques to study them. He has taught a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses at UAH including Computer Methods for Chemical Engineering, Nature and Properties of Materials, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical Engineering Design, Advanced Topics in Bioengineering, and Introduction to Bioinformatics. Read more about Professor Chittur here .

The objective of this Massively Open Online Course (MOOC)  is to review key and essential concepts and ideas from four enabling sciences that impact chemical engineering education: chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. By introducing problems that chemical engineers are asked to solve and exploring the reasons why the enabling sciences are required to solve them, participants will gain a better understanding of the underlying disciplines supporting the work in chemical engineering. A junior or senior standing in high school is the only recommended prerequisite for this class. Although chemical engineering is the focus, this course will benefit anyone considering engineering as a course of study in the future.

Both individuals familiar with chemical and engineering and those interested in learning more about the topic are welcome to attend.  Details regarding the course outline, information about the professor, and logistics will be provided to each participant upon registration. The MOOC is scheduled to launch at the end of February 2014. Individuals completing a minimum level of requirements deemed sufficient to "pass" the MOOC will receive a certification of completion after the MOOC has ended. Certificates of completion are not for academic course credit.  If you have not yet registered, please do so here.

If you have any questions about this upcoming educational opportunity, please feel free to contact Dr. Krishnan Chittur at chitturk@uah.edu
