The University of Alabama in Huntsville boasts 13 intercollegiate sports, including the south's only NCAA Division I ice hockey program. Along with hockey, the Chargers compete in volleyball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, basketball, tennis, women's track and field, baseball and softball. Since 1973, Charger athletes have built a solid tradition of excellence. That tradition includes national championships in hockey as well as several national club hockey, crew and soccer titles. With the exception of ice hockey, UAH is a member of one of the nations most competitive Division II conferences, the Gulf South Conference. The GSC is composed of 18 universities in six southeastern states. As a group, GSC schools have won over 30 national championships dating back to 1971. Since joining the GSC, in 1996 Chargers Athletics has been one of the most successful programs in the south. UAH teams have won GSC titles in men's soccer and softball. There have also been several Charger teams to advance to the Division II regional playoffs. In fact, the Charger softball team came within a whisper of playing for a national championship when they advanced to the final four of the Softball World Series in 1999. The Lady Chargers made a return trip to the SWS in 2001 after capturing their second regional title in three years. The Charger hockey team competes in the College Hockey America Conference. The CHA is an NCAA Division I conference which includes the University of Niagara, the University of Findlay, Bemidji State University, the United States Air Force Academy and Wayne State University. During the inaugural season of the CHA in 2000, the Chargers finished second to Niagara, who went on to advance to the Frozen Four of the NCAA playoffs. Numerous UAH student athletes and coaches have received high honors for their achievements through the years. Several student athletes in Charger Blue have earned All-American, all-region, and all-tournament honors. In addition, UAH has had numerous athletes earn GSC academic honors. The Charger coaching staff has also earned several Coach of the Year honors. For students who enjoy competition and who want to meet other students, UAH offers a full slate of intramural sports for men and women - flag football, floor hockey, billiards, 3-on-3 basketball, indoor soccer, 6-pack soccer, 4-on-4 sand pit volleyball, basketball, badminton, softball, volleyball, disk golf, tennis and more. There are also several club-level sports teams at UAH. Crew (rowing), karate and bowling are among the most popular. In addition to offices and classrooms for the Health and Physical Education Department and Charger Athletics, Spragins Hall houses indoor racquetball and outdoor tennis courts for students, faculty, and staff. In the fall of 2001, the University added a state of the art recreational facility, the University Fitness Center. The Fitness center has an indoor swimming pool, multiple basketball courts, and a spacious, top of the line weight room. |
