UAH to host community symposium focused on maternal care, veterans health, mental health and AI in healthcare

Light the way to better health at SHINE 2025: the Symposium for Health Innovation and Neighborhood Engagement. Hosted by the College of Nursing at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), SHINE brings together community changemakers, health professionals and policymakers to spark innovation, strengthen partnerships and drive real change in access to health care for all. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

“At UAH, we’re committed to serving our region through collaborative research, community partnerships and hands-on outreach that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives,” said Dr. Karen Frith, Dean of the College of Nursing. “SHINE builds on the success of last year’s Health Equity Symposium, expanding both the conversation and our impact. It reflects our ongoing mission to address health disparities and drive innovation in care — especially for underserved populations.”

SHINE 2025 will highlight key issues in health care, including maternal and infant care, veterans health, mental health and the transformative role of AI in health care. Other event highlights include:

  • Keynote speaker: Dr. Tisamarie Sherry, Vice President for Health Policy at the Urban Institute, will bring powerful insights on turning research into real-world impact.
  • Networking reception: An opportunity to connect with health professionals, researchers, students, and community advocates.
  • Special announcement: UAH, alongside key community health partners, will also be unveiling a major multi-agency community health initiative during the event.

The event will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Services Building on the UAH campus. Doors open at 10 a.m., and lunch will be provided.

Tickets are $20 per person or $150 for a reserved table of 8. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged.
