Chargers for life: UAH unveils new vision for alumni engagement

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a part of The University of Alabama System, has announced a renewed vision for its Office of Alumni Relations. The move marks a significant step in enhancing the alumni experience, expanding programming and fostering stronger lifelong connections among the university’s more than 52,000 living alumni.

“Alumni Relations is now aligned within Strategic Communications, which means we can better connect, inform, and celebrate our alumni family,” said Kelly Myers, director of Alumni Relations and Special Events at UAH. “Our goal is to strengthen engagement and ensure every Charger feels part of the UAH story — no matter where they are.”

Strengthening the Charger network

All UAH graduates automatically become members of the UAH Alumni Association, which provides opportunities for continued engagement and connection. Membership is free and immediate upon graduation, offering access to alumni benefits, events, and university resources such as Career Services, transcripts, and professional networking.

The association connects alumni through regional locations and affinity groups, uniting Chargers by geography, shared interests, and academic ties. More than 60% of alumni live within 50 miles of an active group, with existing groups in Huntsville, Birmingham, and Washington, D.C., and affinity groups linked to Athletics, Greek Life and UAH’s academic colleges.

New groups are being developed across North, Central, and South Alabama, as well as the state of Tennessee and North Georgia, aligning with the university’s regional recruitment growth. The “True Blue of the Valley” group, for example, will cover North Alabama and Southern Tennessee.

“UAH alumni share a powerful connection through our university,” said Myers. “Our affinity groups give graduates a place to build relationships, expand networks and stay engaged in the Charger community.”

Expanding programs and events

As part of this strategic refresh, Alumni Relations will introduce a comprehensive annual calendar of programming to create consistent engagement throughout the year. Highlights include Homecoming, Family & Friends Weekend and Commencement celebrations, as well as community events with the Huntsville Havoc, Rocket City Trash Pandas and Huntsville City Football Club.

In addition, the Student Alumni Council student organization will serve as a bridge between current students and alumni, helping future graduates begin building their Charger network before they leave campus. It will also assist students in preparing for life after graduation.

Celebrating Charger excellence

In addition to the expanded programs within Alumni Relations, UAH will soon introduce a retooled awards program – the Sapphire Excellence Awards – to further honor the extraordinary achievement of our alumni and supporters. With categories including the Distinguished Alumni Fellows, Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award, Presidential Community Award, Charger Champion Award, and Research Impact Award, this program will strengthen our commitment to recognizing excellence, service, and the many ways Chargers shape the world.

The Distinguished Alumni Fellows program builds on the legacy of the Alumni of Achievement program, elevating recognition for outstanding alumni who have made a lasting impact in their fields, on society or at the university. The honor celebrates UAH graduates whose exceptional professional success, philanthropic leadership and meaningful service exemplify the very best of Charger Excellence.

Evolving alumni leadership

To strengthen leadership and streamline operations, the Alumni Association Board of Directors will transition from a working board to an advisory board focused on advocacy, strategic guidance, and long-term planning.

“This transition allows the board to focus more strategically on guiding and advocating for the Charger community,” Myers said. “We want our board members to serve as ambassadors and thought leaders who help shape the future of alumni engagement at UAH.”

Building a stronger network

Alumni Relations is also launching an initiative to strengthen its database and ensure that alumni stay connected. Graduates are encouraged to update their contact information to receive news, invitations and opportunities to engage with the university.

“Every UAH graduate is part of our story,” said Myers. “Keeping your contact information current helps us connect you with events, benefits and ways to give back to the Charger community.”
