The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) will celebrate a significant milestone on Friday, Oct. 26, with the official ribbon cutting ceremony of the Charger Village II residence hall addition. The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m., near the south entrance of the building.

The new residence hall is adjacent to the original Charger Village located on the south side. The addition has expanded the university’s ability to house sophomores in an area and focus on developing the Sophomore Year Experience within housing. The facility also allows for community development and for sophomores to remain engaged in the university by being close to several campus resources. The additional bedroom space allows UAH’s Housing and Residence Life department to house a little over 20 percent of the student population on campus.

Charger Village II was completed earlier this year in time for fall semester. The university received the occupancy certification in August. The residence hall has five floors with roughly 85 beds on floors two through five, and 60 located on the first floor. Charger Village II is considered a traditional suite style residence hall. Each suite has a common area with kitchenette, two bathrooms, and two to four bedrooms.

Additional features of the new residence hall include:

  • A certified storm shelter located on the first floor. The area will also serve as the main programmatic and community development space for the residents residing in the facility.
  • Each floor has two community spaces designed and furnished for social interaction as well as two spaces designed and furnished for studying.
  • The addition is similar to the original design and each suite has the same amenities. Suites come with two armchairs, a loveseat, coffee table, entertainment center, two bar stools, and apartment size refrigerator, and microwave.
  • Each bedroom is furnished with a twin extra-long loftable bed, a four-drawer dresser that can be converted to a pair of, two-drawer dressers, a desk with task chair, and a built-in closet. As with all residence halls, utilities, cable, and campus Internet are included.
  • The building comes with five kitchens (one per floor), and 10 laundry rooms (two per floor).
