The UAH 2015 Annual Juried Student Exhibition set for April 8

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Department of Art and Art History is pleased to announce the 2015 Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

The art show will open on Wednesday, April 8, in the Wilson Hall Art Gallery, and continues through Tuesday, May 5. The UAH community is invited to attend an opening reception and awards announcements for the 2015 Juried Student Art Show from 4:30 p.m., to 6:30 p.m. More than 100 pieces selected from recent artwork will be on view in the Wilson Hall and the Louis Salmon Library galleries. The show features paintings, prints, photos and sculpture as well as design and cross disciplinary works from students at all levels.

During Wednesday's reception, at 5:15 p.m., in the Wilson Hall Gallery, the awarding of more than a dozen cash and other prizes will be announced. The prize winners have been selected by visiting juror, Virginia Griswold, a sculpture professor at Austin Peay State University (Tennessee), and include an award sponsored by UAH Provost, Dr. Christine Curtis. Additionally, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle has selected artwork from the collection to display in his office for the next year. The Best of Show prize will be sponsored by Drs. Dorla and Steve Evans. Dorla Evans, UAH professor emerita of finance and her husband, Steve are long-time benefactors of the UAH Department of Art and Art History.

Virginia Griswold is an artist based in Nashville. She is currently an assistant professor of Sculpture and 3D Foundations at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. In 2009, she received a Brooklyn Arts Council Re-Grant to fund the project: What it is, What it will be: Objects Found and Altered in Brooklyn, as well as, a fellowship in Sculpture from the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2011 she was awarded a residency fellowship from Alfred University to study at the the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris for the spring of 2012. She has also been an artist-in-residence at the Gullkistan residency in Laugarvatn, Iceland. Last fall, her solo exhibition Near Earth Objects opened at Austin Peay State University. She received an MFA in Sculpture/Glass from Alfred University, Alfred, NY, and a BFA in Glass/ Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va. She has also studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Pilchuck Glass School, and the Penland School of Crafts.
