The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is hosting the 10th annual Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium in the Charger Union Theater on the UAH campus from Oct. 24 to 26, 2017. The event, which brings together high-ranking government and corporate officials from the aerospace community, is organized by the American Astronautical Society (AAS) in collaboration with UAH, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and the National Space Club – Huntsville.

A centerpiece of this year’s symposium will be the Student Poster Competition. Current UAH undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit an abstract for individual and group projects of ongoing or completed research being done under the mentorship of a faculty member or professional researcher.

For the first time, AAS will also be offering the opportunity for one of the symposium’s Poster Competition winners to present their research at the 2018 International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in October in Bremen, Germany. The first and second place undergraduate and graduate winners in each category will be invited to develop an abstract, a paper, and a presentation, and to submit their abstract to the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) through the regular IAC submission process by the end of February 2018. The winner will then be selected by AAS, who will cover the student’s registration fee, air travel, and hotel accommodation for the IAC. The student will also be asked to give a short presentation about their experience either at the 2018 Dr. Wernher von Braun Memorial Dinner hosted by the National Space Club – Huntsville or at the 11th annual Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium.

In advance of the symposium, UAH’s Office of Vice President for Research and Economic Development has offered to pay the registration fee for a limited number of current UAH students interested in attending. The fee includes all sessions, continental breakfasts, break refreshments, two lunches, and two receptions. This opportunity not connected to participation in the poster competition. For more information and to apply, visit the Student Services Building room 324A no later than Friday, Sept. 8. UAH students who participate in the Student Poster Competition are welcome to attend the symposium’s Opening Kick Off and Reception and do not need to register for the full symposium to do so.
