NOTE: Book VIII of the Gallic Wars, and the Alexandrian War, are now almost universally believed to have been written by Aulus Hirtius, a lieutenant of Caesar in Gaul, and consul in 43 B.C., the year after Caesar's assassination. He died leading his troops against Mark Antony, who was besieging Mutina.
The African and Hispanic Wars are believed to have been written by officers who clearly took part in them, but who didn't possess quite the same level of writing ability of Caesar, or even Hirtius.
