Speaker: Caroline Buncick, Burritt on the Mountain

“Expansion at Burritt: Dorthy Davidson Rosenwald Schoolhouse and Folklife School”

The May meeting speaker is Caroline Kelly Buncick from Burritt on the Mountain. Buncick will present the newest addition to Burritt, the Dorthy Davidson Rosenwald Schoolhouse, and its relationship to an important part of the Southern African American story.

In the early 1900s Booker T. Washington and philanthropist and businessman Julius Rosenwald collaborated to form a foundation that would foster over 5000 educational buildings for African American communities throughout the South. Buncick will discuss the struggle that black children faced and how Washington and Rosenwald, together with the black communities, improved the chances of obtaining a quality education for thousands of children.

Burritt on the Mountain is building a replica Rosenwald schoolhouse in time for the Alabama’s bicentennial and will create an exhibit to educate visitors about this story. The schoolhouse will also house classrooms for a new educational program for local 4th graders.

The Dorothy Davidson Rosenwald Schoolhouse will be part of the Burritt Folklife School. Buncick will also discuss this new Folklife School which is being modeled after the Campbell Folk School in Boone NC.

Franz Rosenberger

Photography has been Franz's hobby for several decades. But now, after retirement from a rewarding career in physics, there is - finally - no excuse for not "being at the right spot at the right time". Check out some of Franz's photos.
