Dr. Emanuel A. Waddell, Associate Dean of the College of Science
Emanuel A. Waddell has been named Associate Dean of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Science. He began his duties on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
"I'm pleased that Dr. Waddell will be serving in this very important leadership role for the College of Science. I look forward to working with him to empower our students, faculty, and staff to succeed at the highest levels," said Dr. Sundar Christopher, Dean of the College of Science.
Waddell is an Associate Professor of Chemistry in the College of Science.

I am looking forward to assisting the College of Science to create opportunities for students, faculty and staff with a special focus on increasing retention and graduation rates of our students," said Dr. Emanuel A. Waddell, Associate Dean of the College of Science.
He is a highly skilled analytical chemist with proficiency in contact angle goniometry, raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, absorbance spectroscopy, laser micromachining, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Waddell has written and published numerous research articles and book chapters including Laser Micromachining, Techniques of Fabrication, DNA Sequencing Using Florescence Detection, and Laser Ablation as a Fabrication Technique for Microfluidic Devices.
Waddell holds two patents: "Surface Charge Modification Within Preformed Polymer Microchannels to Modulate Flow and Fabrication of Microarrays By Laser Ablation in Preformed Microchannels," and "Chemical Modification of Substrates by Photo-Ablation under Different Local Atmospheres and Chemical Environments for the Fabrication of Microstructures." And, he has been the keynote/featured speaker at many higher education conferences.
He has demonstrated successful fundraising skills by obtaining grant monies from the National Science Foundation, National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and the Henry and Camille Dreyfus Foundation.
Waddell's leadership and administrative responsibilities include managing UAH's Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program, co-coordinating the campus-wide Materials Science Program and serving as the liaison between the graduate school and minority graduate students. He also has experience in budget development, building consensus between different groups and leading organizations as evidenced by serving as the Technical Chair for the Annual Meeting of the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers in 2013 and 2014, and serving as the president of the Alabama Academy of Science in 2013.
Waddell has served as reviewer for numerous journals and granting agencies including The International Journal for Environmental Research and Public Health, The Journal of Laser Micro and Nanoengineering, and The American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund.
In 2013, Waddell was the recipient of the National Role Model Faculty Mentor Award from Minority Access, Inc. Additional awards and honors include the Dean's Service Award, College of Science - UAH, and the District Award of Merit Boy Scouts of America.
Waddell earned an Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Physics from Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA), a Master's of Science degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA).
