The ILC offers the following services for students. Some services are optional and are available on request. Academic Advising The director of the ILC is available for consultation regarding progress through the ILC and for informal guidance as students prepare to move into the regular academic setting. The director and instructors are also available for consultation regarding students' progress and performance on the TOEFL (iBT) or IELTS. Prior to admission to a degree program at the university, ILC students are welcome to consult with a professional academic advisor who handles non-degree and conditionally admitted students. The pre-advising helps students understand the requirements of different colleges and degree programs at the university, so they can make a more informed decision regarding their academic careers. In addition, professional academic advisors are available in each college for consultation when a student has chosen his/her area of focus (Business, Engineering, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Nursing, Science). For more information regarding the programs of study in the various colleges and their departments, visit department sites via the UAH website. Tutoring Experienced tutors are available for individualized help. The terms of the tutoring are arranged between the student(s) and tutor. A list of qualified tutors (including those who specialize in TOEFL preparation) is available upon request. In addition, instructors in the ILC are available, at no charge, for individualized help during their regularly scheduled office hours each week. Cost: $15-25/hour (can be shared with one other ILC student, for a split cost of $7.50 - 12.50/hour) Conversation Partners Conversation partners (both undergraduate and graduate students) are available for one-on-one discussions about academic life, current events, and general topics of interest. The conversation partners are not trained tutors but are native speakers of English who can provide the ILC student with a contact for information about life at UAH and in Huntsville. Whenever possible, ILC students will be paired with partners who share their interests and major field of study. Cost: $10/hour (can be shared with one other ILC student, for a split cost of $5/hour) Shuttle Service There is a Friday night shuttle service that is free of charge for UAH students. The shuttle runs from 5:00 - 10:15 p.m. and drops students at one of three destinations: Bridge Street Town Centre (shopping, cafe/restaurant, and theater complex), Target, and Wal-Mart Supercenter. A regular city route also passes through the UAHuntsville campus with a shuttle that runs daily from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm with stops at Bridge Street Town Centre and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Additional shuttle trips can be scheduled if sufficient interest merits. Students who would like to arrange trips on Friday afternoons can speak with their instructors or contact the director of ILC at firstname.lastname@example.org. Extracurricular Activities The ILC organizes a start-of-session get-together at local restaurants. The program provides transportation to and from the event. Participation, however, is optional. In addition, throughout the session, the program offers the option of excursions to sporting events and local points of interest (including the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home to Space Camp). These trips are offered on an optional basis. Admission costs are the responsibility of individual students but the entire cost of a sessions' worth of excursions would be estimated at no more than $100. Transportation is provided free of charge for these events. For more information about any of the services listed here, contact the director of ILC at email@example.com.
