Dean's Message

berkowitz pMessage from the Dean

I am so glad that you have decided to visit the UAHuntsville Graduate Studies web page. We take pride in the many graduate programs in place here and feel that we have a lot to offer in terms of research, coursework and internships. Graduate study has long been seen as important to the continuing growth of Huntsville, North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley so masters programs at UAHuntsville first appeared in 1963 with doctoral programs following in 1971.

The vast majority of our faculty participate in graduate education and are full members of the graduate faculty. In many cases, these faculty are internationally recognized in their fields and are conducting ground breaking research. As a result, some 40 doctorates are granted each year to students in three of the five colleges. All five colleges grant some 300 master's degrees each year and additionally offer many certificate programs of interest to working professionals. The fact that most of our graduates stay in North Alabama contributes to Huntsville being placed on multiple lists of desirable places to live in the United States, but our contribution is not limited to North Alabama. Our students go on to make a difference in other states, the nation and the world.

You can learn about many of our procedures by exploring our web page but we know that there is nothing like the personal touch. Feel free to contact us at deangrad@uah.edu or 256.824.6002. We are committed to providing a quality educational experience at all levels at UAHuntsville. Our goal is to provide you the best possible post-baccalaureate education possible, both in formal coursework and research activities. Our graduate programs are supported both by internal funding and by a strong base of externally sponsored research. Many of our graduate students work on state-of-the-art research projects in the preparation of their theses and dissertations. The high rate of success is evidenced by the consistently large number of students on the Dean's List. Highly competitive stipends for teaching and research assistantships are available, and many of our students are supported by fellowship programs.

Every day, faculty are contributing to the body of knowledge and developing new courses and even new degree programs. Come grow with us. You will probably want to explore the departmental web sites in areas of your interest. Let us know if we can help point you in the right direction. As Huntsville helps launch rockets, let us help launch the next phase of your career!
