Chien-Pin Chen, professor and chairperson of the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) was recently named as an associate fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
AIAA is the principal society of aerospace engineers and scientists. To be selected for the grade of AIAA associate fellow, an individual must be an AIAA senior member with at least 12 years professional experience, and be recommended by a minimum of three current associate fellows.
Dr. Chen has more than 25 years of experience in developing computational methodologies and physical models for obtaining solutions to complex multi-physics problems in fluid dynamics, aerothermodynamics, propulsion systems, aero-optics and lab-on-chip micro/nano fluidics.
His research in propulsion related areas include liquid jet breakup, atomization, multi-component fuel evaporation, injector design, spray and combustion, aero-thermal environment of hypersonic vehicles, as well as rocket nozzle film cooling problems.
Dr. Chen’s recent major research projects include “Microfluidic Modeling on Lab-on-Chip” (NASA LOCAD 2004-2006), “Lox-Methane Injector Modeling” (NASA 2006-2009), “Density Wave Instability in Regenerating Film Cooling of Lox-Methane Engines” (NASA 2009-2010), “Computational Aero-Optics Simulation Development” (MDA MSTAR 2010-2013).
He received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from National Taiwan University. Dr. Chen earned a master of science degree and a Ph.D., in chemical engineering from Michigan State University.
The 2012 associate fellows were honored earlier this month in conjunction with the 50th AIAA Aerospace Sciences meeting in Nashville, Tenn.
