UAH's Susan Alexander recipient of AANP State Award for Excellence

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (June 3, 2013) - Susan Alexander, a faculty member at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Nursing, was recently selected as the recipient of the Alabama State Award for Nurse Practitioner Excellence.

UAH's Alexander and other nurse practitioners (NPs) and NP advocates, recipients of the prestigious AANP State Award for Excellence, will be honored during the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2013 National Conference in Las Vegas, June 19 - 23.

Dr. Alexander a clinical assistant professor of nursing at UAH, has been a nurse practitioner since 2003, and also maintains certification in advanced diabetes management. In addition to her faculty responsibilities, Alexander sees patients weekly at a rural health clinic in North Alabama.

Her clinical expertise and research interests includes diabetes, adult health, technology applications for nurses and students, and distance education methods and outcomes. Alexander, a member of the UAH nursing faculty since 2009, teaches primary care of adults, scholarly inquiry for nursing, advanced pathophysiology experiential clinical, advanced pharmacology and issues in metabolic diseases.

She has written numerous publications, peer-reviewed journals, and given presentations. Alexander is the recipient of several grants including "The Effects of GLP-1 Agonists on C-peptide Levels of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes," "Development of a Web-Based Mobile Technology Application for Healthcare Providers in Transplant Care," and "The Effect of Transplant Education on Nurses' Attitudes towards Organ Donation and Plans to Work with Transplant Patients."

Alexander earned a BSN, MSN and DNP from UAH. She received a Post-Master's Adult Nurse Practitioner Certificate from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The State Award for Nurse Practitioner Excellence, was founded in 1991, and recognizes an NP in a state who demonstrates excellence in practice. In 1993, the State Award for Nurse Practitioner Advocate was added to recognize the efforts of individuals who have made a significant contribution toward increasing the awareness and acceptance of NPs.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) represents the interests of approximately 157,000 NPs across the country, providing a unified networking platform and advocating for their role as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered and personalized health care.

The organization provides legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients and other health care consumers.
