Engineering professor wins prestigious junior faculty enhancement award

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (May 22, 2013) - Dr. George Nelson, Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), was recently awarded the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award.

Given out by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a consortium of 109 major Ph.D.-granting universities, the one-year grant provides seed money for research by junior faculty at member institutions, of which UAH is one.

"Professor Nelson's proposal was one of only 30 selected from a total of 147 submitted from across the nation," said Dr. Shankar Mahalingam, Dean of UAH's College of Engineering, of the highly competitive process. "So we are very proud of his accomplishment."

Dr. Nelson's work includes transport phenomena, energy storage and conversion devices, sustainable energy systems, and multi-scale modeling and analysis. This grant will go toward his research on the stability of thermoelectric materials at high temperatures.

"I'm looking forward to using this award to explore thermoelectric materials in collaboration with researchers at Oak Ridge National Lab," said Dr. Nelson. "It's an honor, and very encouraging, to receive a nationally competitive award like the Powe Award."
