UAH one of just three new sites selected for 2014 Tech Trek camp

UAH, in partnership with the Huntsville branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), was named last week as one of three new sites to host the annual Tech Trek camp next summer.

First launched in 1998 at Stanford University, Tech Trek is a weeklong science and math summer camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields for girls entering the eighth grade.

Noted Philosopher Alastair J. Norcross to lecture at UAH

Noted Philosopher Alastair J. Norcross, will be the keynote speaker for UAH College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Philosophy Distinguished Speaker Series on Friday, October 11.

Norcross, associate professor of Philosophy at The University of Colorado Boulder (UC Boulder) will present the talk, "The Road to Hell" at 7 p.m., in the Union Grove Gallery on campus. The lecture will examine whether intentions matter to the ethical worth of our actions.

UAH to show acclaimed documentary "Invisible War" Oct. 1

The UAH Women' s Studies Program is partnering with the UAH Women's Studies student organization, POWER, the UAH Veteran's Network, and the local branch of The American Association of University Women, to sponsor a showing of the 2012 documentary Invisible War ( invisiblewarmovie.com).

The film will be shown Tuesday, October 1, in the UAH University Center Exhibit Hall at 7:30 p.m., (running time is approximately 97 minutes). The event is free and open to the public. Representatives Chanley Pickard and Jennifer Blatter from Army Community Service at Redstone Arsenal will give a pre-show lecture at 7 p.m., and answer questions after the film. Pickard, is Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program (SHARP) Manager, and Blatter, is SHARP Victim Advocate, Army Community Service.

UAH and Arcos Films invite the Huntsville community to a FREE screening of Switch, a new award-winning documentary that moves past the politics to deliver the straight answers on energy.

Starting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in UAH's Chan Auditorium, Switch asks some of today most controversial energy questions: Is fracking polluting our water? How dangerous is nuclear energy? Will gasoline prices continue to rise? Can we clean up coal pollution? Can renewables really power our future?

Cornell’s Dean of Engineering to give presentation at UAH on economic development

The College of Engineering at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) invites you to a special lecture by Dr. Lance Collins, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering at Cornell University.

The presentation, entitled "The New York City Applied Sciences Initiative - A Unique Public-Private-Academic Partnership for Economic Development," will take place on Friday, Sept. 27, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 301 of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology.

Dr. Collins will be discussing a 2010 initiative by the city of New York to relieve its tech sector bottleneck through a yearlong competition to increase the supply of tech talent. The prize? A "land grant" and $100 million to the winning universities, which would then be responsible for building and operating a new campus on the land dedicated to innovation and commercialization in the tech sector.

UAH College of Engineering to host distinguished seminar featuring Lance Collins of Cornell University

Lance R.Collins, dean of the College of Engineering at Cornell University, will be the guest speaker for UAH College of Engineering Distinguished Seminar on Friday, September 27.

The event is a joint effort of the university's College of Engineering, and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. Collins presentation "Role of Turbulence in the Atmospheric Processing of Clouds," will begin at 2 p.m., in Technology Hall S-105. The talk is free and open to the public.

Collins is the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering at Cornell University (CU). He previously served as the S. C. Thomas Sze Director of the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at CU from 2005-2010, and he was Director of Graduate Studies for Aerospace Engineering 2003-2005.

UAH Office of Diversity to host reception for  Children's Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman

One of the country's most influential advocates for improving the lives of disadvantaged children, Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children's Defense Fund, will be honored at UAH with a public reception on Thursday, October 3.

Edelman's visit to campus is sponsored by the UAH Office of Diversity. The reception will be held from 2:30 p.m., to 4 p.m., in the University Center Exhibit Hall, and is free and open to the public.

Edelman founded the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) more than 40 years ago to provide a lobby for children's issues - specifically education, hunger, health care and protection. Also, as an advocate for CDF, Edelman convinced Congress to overhaul foster care. CDF is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Renowned women's historian Linda Gordon to lecture on reproductive rights

New York University Professor Linda Gordon, whose first-book, Woman's Body, Woman's Right: The History of Birth Control in America, the definitive history of birth-control politics in the country, will lecture next month at UAH.

Her visit is sponsored by the UAH Women's Studies Program, and the Short-Term Eminent Scholar Program of the UAH Humanities Center. Gordon will give two public lectures on Thursday, October 24. Both events are free and open to the public.

Therapy dogs bring stress relief, tail wags to UAH campus

Since the spring of 2010, Therapy Partners Inc. has been bringing therapy dogs to the campus of  UAH to provide stress relief during exam week.

"Anything we can do to help students feel better as they balance their multitude of responsibilities, we want to do," says Kelly Cothran, a licensed professional counselor who works at the UAH Counseling Center.

UAH Career Fair sees record number of students, employers

Each semester, the Student Success Center (SSC) at UAH hosts a Career Fair with the goal of bringing students and employers together for networking, internship and co-op opportunities, and employment. But last week's event, held Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UAH's Fitness Center, exceeded all expectations.
