UAH hurricane "chasers" set up in Louisiana

UAHMAXPicayune

A team of students and scientists from The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has its instruments on site in Louisiana, ready to collect data as Hurricane Isaac comes ashore.

The MAX (Mobile Alabama X-band) Doppler radar is at the airport in Picayune, La., while the MIPS (Mobile Integrated Profiling System) and its suite of upward-looking Doppler radar and other instruments is in a field near the National Weather Service office in Slidell, La.

This arrangement of instruments, plus the NWS Doppler at Slidell, gives the research team an opportunity to collect 3D information in depth as the storm passes.

The seven graduate students and two scientists from UAH's Atmospheric Science Department and the Earth System Science Center want to study how the storm spins down as it moves inland. The goal of this research is to improve the ability to predict severe weather events that spin off from hurricanes.
