HUNTSVILLE, Ala (September 14, 2012) — Six students at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) were recently awarded NASA funded Alabama Space Grant Consortium Fellowships and Scholarships. The Alabama Space Grant Consortium (ASGC), is a member of the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. In Alabama, more than $500,000 is awarded in Space Grant Scholarships and Fellowships each year.
ASGC will award two UAH graduate students $37,000 in fellowships each, (plus tuition) as well as one teacher education scholarship. Additionally, four undergraduate students will receive scholarships of $1,000 each. Directing the UAH ASGC program are Dr. John C. Gregory
(consortium director), and Dr. Gerald R. Karr (campus director).
The two UAH ASGC graduate fellows are:
- Kristen Ann Lackeos —Physics (advisor Dr. Richard Lieu)
- Brian Sweeney —Mechanical Engineering (advisor Dr. Robert Frederick)
The four UAH undergraduate students are:
- Elinor P. Crook — Earth Systems Science
- Brittani Renee Searcy — Aerospace Engineering
- Lindsay Megan Shine — Industrial & Systems Engineering
- Samantha Marie Shine — Industrial & Systems Engineering
The Alabama consortium includes the state’s seven institutions that are involved in space-related research and teaching. Consortium members include UAH, which is a space grant university and the consortium’s lead institution, Alabama A & M University, Auburn University, Tuskegee University, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, The University of Alabama, and The University of South Alabama.
The ASGC supports undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships for students studying in an aerospace-related discipline at participating universities. The awards are made to United States citizens with proven academic excellence and accomplishments.
In 24 years, the Alabama program has funded a total of 753 undergraduate scholarships and 271 graduate fellowships, for a total of nearly $6.8 million in financial support. The students are competitively selected from hundreds of applicants each year. This current year $512,500 ($240,500 in matching, non-federal funds and $272,000 in NASA funds) was directed to scholarship and fellowships.
