My “open-ended systems” develop their own identity. They interact with each other. They play, sometimes violently, overwhelm, engulf and contain each other, are changed by their relationships. They make gestures that seem almost human but, of course, are not. As I’m working on them they become events and are “done” when they become animated. I make elements of the painting awkward and goofy, treating paint handling styles and color as types of systems. I might for example, put flat primary colors next to an oily, gushy, brushy area. My impulse is to make them cohesive, but to avoid standard patterns. I’m not interested in formalism. I want to build structures of these images and marks that become something else.
