The UAH Department of Music plays host to a number of ensembles which have been providing diverse and multicultural musical entertainment in both local and international venues for many years. The UAH Choirs are directed by Dr. Erin Colwitz.
The UAH CONCERT CHOIR is a mixed voice, auditioned ensemble comprised of singers from almost every major on campus. The Concert Choir is available to all students from every college and every major. The Concert Choir and Chamber Choir often collaborate with the UAH Wind Ensemble, Huntsville Community Chorus and Huntsville Symphony.
The UAH Chamber Choir is a mixed voice, highly selective ensemble of 24 singers. This ensemble also performs with the symphony and community chorus on occasion. The UAH Chamber Choir performs twice per semester (typically) and is often invited to sing for special events related to the University. This ensemble is open to upper classmen (music majors and non-majors alike) who are outstanding readers and singers. Both the Concert and Chamber Choirs tour domestically and internationally. The choirs tour Italy in May of 2010, London and Paris in 2014 and are planning a tour to China, potentially, for 2016.
All ensembles are auditioned. Click here for information on choir auditions.
2014 All-State Music Blitz
The UAHuntsville Concert Choir recently sang, along with the choirs from Alabama A & M, Orff’s Carmina Burana, with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and the Huntsville Community Chorus. A stunning piece, the choruses had a blast with the variety of languages and singing over all that percussion!
The Chamber Choir toured Southern California over Spring Break (March 19-24, 2012). While in Los Angeles and Orange County, they performed in various venues. They also sang in a clinic with Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe, current Chair of Choral and Sacred Music at USC, and participated in a choral exchange with the University Singers at the California State University, Fullerton, Dr. Rob Istad, conductor and Director of Choirs. It was a very successful tour for the choir and we all managed to come back with our southern accents in tact.
The UAHuntsville Chamber Choir was selected to perform at the 2012 Alabama Music Educators Association Conference in Montgomery, January 19-21 of 2012. The choir will performed approximately fifty minutes of music for music teachers, students and parents from all over the state of Alabama. This was a remarkable recruiting opportunity for UAHuntsville, and was additionally a great honor for our UAHuntsville singers who worked hard to establish themselves as a reputable chorus. This was the first time this particular chorus was asked to sing at this conference.
