1. Pei-Ling Chan Chair in Physics

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) seeks an innovative researcher in the field of biophysics, broadly including biophotonics, biomaterials, and closely-related areas of material science, to be the next Pei-Ling Chan Chair of Physics. The department seeks to broaden its research portfolio beyond our traditional strengths in astrophysics, optics and photonics, and nonlinear materials. The Chan Chair would anchor this effort and play a key role in determining the future direction of departmental and college research in this field, with the opportunity to provide leadership in developing a biophysics/biophotonics curriculum within the department and college to attract exceptional students to the University.

The successful candidate will be a prominent scholar and researcher with a history of research in biophysics, biophotonics, bio-optics, biochemistry, or related fields. Contributing effectively to the Department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching programs is expected, as is actively supervising physics graduate students for the Ph.D. degree. An experimental/theoretical specialization within the biophysics field is not identified, and could include soft matter, membranes, neurophysics, genetic and cellular networks, biological and biologically-inspired materials, cell dynamics, sensors and spectroscopy of single molecules, the manipulation of molecules in living cells, nano-structural and the nano-mechanical properties of biological surfaces, and investigation of biological processes using spectroscopy and multidimensional fluorescence imaging techniques, nanoparticles, and plasmonics.

This endowed position offers an exciting opportunity for joint research, educational projects, and collaborations within UAH (such as with the biophysics Chan Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences) as well as with non-profit, government, and industrial partners located in Huntsville and the region. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have credentials in research and teaching for appointment with tenure as a senior Associate Professor or Professor. They will have a record of, and be currently successful in, securing external funding and in supporting and graduating Ph.D. students.
