The Department of Chemistry has specializations in Biochemistry, Biological Chemistry and medicinal Chemistry, with the capabilities to cultivate both mammalian and microbial cells.

CO2 Incubators

The department houses a number of CO2 incubators for the growth of various mammalian cell lineages. This Isotemp model has 184L capacity with precise temperature controls for the stability of all culture parameters. The ambient temperature range from 5 °C to 60°C. contains low and high CO2 alarms, plus power interruption and temperature deviation alarms.

Shake Flask Incubators

We use shaking incubators to cultivate microorganisms for preliminary studies and as seed stocks for bioreactors. This Corning cabinet-style incubator has a built in orbital shaker with an assortment of platforms to accommodate a range of flask sizes, Petri dishes and test tube racks. It has an ambient temperature range from +5° C to 80° C and speed range from 20 - 300 rpm.

Sterilization of media and containers, as well as treatment of biowaste proceeds through a number of autoclaves. All segments of the sterilization cycle (fill, sterile, exhaust and dry) commence and run to completion by the start button with this bench-top autoclave. Temperature can be selected at either 121°C or 134°C, while the sterilization and drying times are fully adjustable.
