The Department of Biological Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree with concentrations available in several areas. Our graduates have gone on to careers in various health professions, industry, academia and government laboratories. We strongly encourage our majors to gain research experience with a faculty member, either by taking the department's undergraduate research course or as a paid student research assistant. This can be an important factor in job or graduate program applications. General Information Curricula are available for students who elect to pursue concentrations in biochemistry, ecology and evolution, exercise physiology, microbiology, pre-health professional, or secondary education programs. All student programs of study may be developed to fit each individual’s career goals with the assistance of advisors and faculty. Requirements A minimum of 128 hours total, including Charger Foundations, Major and elective courses. A minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework in BYS including the following core courses: BYS 119, 120, 219, 300, and 490. One course in calculus (if the student intends to pursue a course of study requiring more advanced mathematics background, MA171 is recommended to meet this requirement; otherwise, MA120 may be used to meet this requirement) Optional / Recommended A course in biochemistry A course in statistics Concentrations The following are specialized concentration options available to biological sciences majors in addition to a general degree in Biological Sciences. Secondary education Biochemistry Pre-health professional Microbiology Exercise physiology Ecology and evolutionary biology Marine Science Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium Select courses in marine sciences, available through the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium, may be taken for credit at UAH toward a biological sciences major or minor, a minor in marine sciences, or a Master of Science degree in biological sciences. Biological sciences majors electing a marine sciences minor generally would not take MS courses in the minor that were principally biologically oriented. Courses for which credit is not given for a biological sciences major or minor can be taken as electives. UAH's MESC liaison officer must approve all programs of study that involve marine sciences courses. Dauphin Island Sea Lab Our department is also affiliated with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and our students have the opportunity to take courses there during the summer.
