student info prospectiveWelcome to UAH’s Bachelor in Professional Studies (BPS) program.  The BPS program was developed to meet the needs of today’s adult learner by providing students with ongoing academic support as they create a tailored interdisciplinary degree program aimed at meeting their personal and professional goals.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Currently the Bachelor in Professional Studies program accepts the following types of PLA:

  • Transfer Credit: The eligibility of your transfer credits depends on the subject matter of each credit and the accreditation status of the institution that awarded each credit. Credits in academic subjects are usually eligible for transfer if they were awarded by an institution accredited by one of the regional agencies recognized by the American Council on Education. The Bachelor in Professional Studies program can take up to 60 hours of credit from community college/2-year institutions and up to 75% of credits from 4-year institutions. The program can also accept up to 34 hours of technical credit that is applied to the student’s general electives.
  • Military Training: Credits accepted that are certified by the American Council on Education and provided through a Joint Services Transcript.
  • Standardized Exams: Students can either provide UAH Admissions with official scores from their standardized exams or may take the exam at UAH through UAH Testing and Certification Services

    • DANTES (DSSTs)

 Common Concerns of Students Returning to College

  • Can I afford tuition?
    • Tuition is definitely a factor when you’re considering a return to school.  More than 2/3 of our students receive financial assistance of some kind.
    • UAH’s financial aid office is available to answer all of your questions regarding loans, grants and scholarships. Representatives are available from 8:15 – 5:00 Monday through Friday to answer any questions you have about financial assistance. Please visit UAH Undergraduate Financial Aid for additional information.
    • Transfer students who have completed at least 24 credit hours and maintained a 3.0 GPA are higher are eligible to receive a transfer merit scholarship. There are also competitive scholarships available through the University. Complete University scholarship details can be found at UAH Undergraduate Financial Aid Scholarships.
    • The College of Professional and Continuing Studies maintains a Pinterest site with information on an array of scholarship opportunities.

  • I’m worried that I’ll have a hard time balancing classwork with the demands of family and work.
    • Finding a good work/life balance is not easy and the thought of adding the responsibilities of going to school may seem a bit overwhelming, but UAH offers resources that can help.
      • UAH Student Success Center can help with time management and
      • UAH Counseling Center supports students in a number of ways, from helping with the adjustment back to school, stress management, anxiety or any other areas that cause difficulties for our students.

  • Will I gain skills that will be applicable to my professional goals?
    • The Bachelor in Professional Studies is an interdisciplinary program where students study across multiple academic disciplines to create one well-rounded, tailored program that is relevant to their personal and/or professional goals. In the BPS program, students gain stronger communication skills, develop critical thinking and analysis skills, and increase problem solving and decision making abilities. The BPS academic advisor works closely with students to understand their professional objectives and help them create a plan of study to meet their needs.

  • It has been a long time since I took classes and I wasn’t the best student. What if I’m not successful this time around?
    • That’s a concern that’s common among many students returning to the classroom, so to address those concerns, the first class students take in the Bachelor in Professional Studies program is PRO 301: Theories and Practices of Adult Learning. This class focuses on issues unique to adult re-entry students such as motivation, learning styles and strategies, and setting educational goals. Upon completion of this course, students will have learned about the academic support services available to them and gained the skills needed to be successful.
