Explore America’s stories through a highly interactive, artwork-driven video conferences. Begin the four-part series with a review of the language of art, focusing on analysis, interpretation, and critique. Move on to Early America to learn how Americans transformed themselves from colonists to citizens. Wars at Home and Abroad will cover the Civil War through WWII. Contemporary Life art features the transformation of Americans entering the post-War era. Artists grappled with how to reflect America’s changing social and political landscape, with various themes including movements, modern technology, and works that ask us, “What is an American today?”

It Happened in Alabama

She knows where “all the bones are buried,” and the secrets that lie beneath the surface in North Alabama––and OLLI members love to hear Jacque Reeves tell about them. Jacque will delight us with a three-part series, beginning with one Alabama event that sent shockwaves across the United States. The series begins with the Massacre at Ft. Mims, Alabama, followed by Revenge at Horseshoe Bend, Alabama, and finally, The Boys of the Alamo. How are all of these events related? Come and find out! Jacque will lead you into the “shadows of the past” to learn the real story behind these tales of massacre, mayhem, and revenge.

Computer Applications

Computer Basics: The Very Beginning provides the basic skills necessary to be successful in our other computer courses. However, you may already possess the skills to succeed without this basic course.

Below are essential skills needed for success:
  • Knowledge of the keyboard. Not the same as typing skills, although those help.
  • Basic mouse handling skills – the ability to click, double-click, and right-click.
  • Ability to select portions of text and copy/paste to another location.
  • Ability to find and open a document.
  • Basic formatting skills, fonts and font size, and page set-up (margins, for instance).
  • Ability to save a document to the desired location.
  • Understand the difference between save and save as.
  • File handling: copy, move and delete a file; create a folder.
How do you score?

If you answer "YES, I know how to do that," then you are ready to start any other computer course.

Computer Basics: The Very Beginning

Welcome to a class for the truly beginning computer student! Step-by-step you will be introduced to a computer, keyboard, mouse, and screen–as well as a few simple programs and other hardware components. Practice skills such as cut, copy, and paste that will help you use almost any program. Learn how to organize files on a computer, where they go when you hit “save” and how to find them again. Learn how to access the internet and be introduced to the concept of email. Upon successful completion, you’ll be amazed at your new skills and ready to move into our other computer course offerings.

Online Security—Simple Steps to Keep You Safe

Have Fun with Gmail!

Gmail is one of today’s most popular email services. It includes an “ever increasing” amount of storage space, provides access to many other Google features, and has options not available in other free email accounts. You will set up a Gmail account, learn to send and receive emails, learn to use Gmail’s powerful search features, and how to organize and categorize your emails into groups. You will also learn how to use the Google calendar and chat features.

Easy Photo Editing and Organizing Using Google Photos

Google Photos is a free photo and video management and editing tool offering unlimited storage and synchronization with mobile devices. Learn how to organize photos into groups (and how Google automatically helps with this task). Practice using the search feature to find groups of people, places, and things. Learn how Google Photos can use “geotagging” data to determine locations in older pictures. Google Photos also includes an easy photo-editing feature. Practice using the edit button to access a new toolbar which enables you to crop an image, adjust shade, light, and colors. In addition, you can add pre-defined effects to your pictures.

Microsoft Word for Beginners

Have you ever wanted to write a letter on your computer or modify a document? Basic proficiency in Word will enable you do to these tasks with ease. Word is a flexible tool that is useful for basic day-to-day purposes such as typing, editing and printing textual information, and it is one of the most user-friendly document software products available. Explore the menu tabs, ribbon groups, and other basic functions that will get you started on your way to creating attractive letters using different type styles, colors, and other formatting tools to design documents. Upon completion, you will be able to create and modify an existing document.

Windows 10© was designed to run across many Microsoft product lines like your smartphone, tablet and PC. Our focus will be on the PC, where you will practice with the redesigned user interface, including the “Start” screen. Learn about the new virtual desktop, the Task View feature which permits users to display and switch between open windows, and the Cortana personal assistant. You will be introduced to the improved security features, and learn about automatic compression of system files.


Fun with Tennis Fundamentals!

Have you ever wanted to try your hand (or backhand) at tennis? In an enjoyable course designed for beginning or re-entry level players, strokes, footwork, equipment, scoring and positioning will be introduced in a fun environment. Please bring your racket. Breath-Centered Yoga

Explore the benefits and practical applications of yoga for health and healing. Using a gentle format, we will combine breath and movement in order to soothe the body and focus the mind. All props are provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats. This class will be accessible to beginners and experienced practitioners, as well as those with unique physical needs. A minimum of 10 students must be enrolled for the class to be held. There will be a $15 lab fee for this class.

Let's Speak Travel Spanish

You’ll laugh, as you have fun learning in this beginning course in Spanish conversation which emphasizes oral communication in a variety of topics at a basic level. There will be great emphasis on developing speaking ability. You will be introduced to dialogues on specified topics, and only that grammar and structure absolutely necessary for speaking will be emphasized. This class is a perfect starting point for the casual traveler!

Brushstrokes: Painting with Friends

Have fun as our instructor leads us, step by step, in creating our own “masterpieces” based on existing works of art using acrylic paints. Bring an old shirt to protect your clothes. A $50 supplies fee is payable to the instructor at the first class; cash or check accepted. Fee includes all painting supplies and two 16” x 20” canvases.

Looking for a fun, relaxing approach to artistic creativity? Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create amazing designs by drawing structured patterns. Zentangle offers students an opportunity for artistic expression in a collaborative atmosphere. Students will learn a series of basic “tangles” (repeated and embellished designs); no artistic skills or previous experience required! The benefits of Zentangle include increased focus, relaxation and a sense of creative mastery.
