UAV Docking, Charging, and Data Transfer Method and Device Docket: UAH-P-15003, 15004 Technology Small unmanned aerial vehicles (SUAVs) are becoming increasingly important in military, industrial, and business applications. However, the flight time of most SUAVs is limited by the relatively small amount of energy they can carry for flight. Various recharging/refueling approaches have been suggested, but none have been set forth. Researchers at UAH have developed a docking method and device that facilitates the docking and recharging of a SUAV. This enables one or many such SUAVs to perform sustained operations by allowing them to dock and recharge as well as exchange and receive data with the docking station. The applications of this invention are numerous, as it enables SUAVs to continuously perform diverse tasks ranging from storm-tracking to package delivery to surveillance. Applications Surveillance Package/mail delivery Storm tracking Search and rescue Telecommunications Advantages Increased UAV autonomy Allows faster response time Allows higher volume and range of operation Status State of Development: Prototype Licensing Status: Available for licensing Patent Status: Patented
