Integrated Armored Structure

UAH-P-11005-Integrated Armored Structure-01-01

Docket: UAH-P-11005

Technology

Conventional metallic plates that provide protection against ballistics lack the structural strength and thermal protection on hypervelocity impacts.

Researchers at UAH have developed a shield that protects the subject from projectiles, such as bullets or explosion fragments. Upon impact, the kinetic energy forces from a projectile hitting this shield have a greater lateral dispersion than currently available shields. As a result, this protection system diminishes impact forces and decreases blunt energy trauma more efficiently.

This shield attenuates acoustic energy and shock waves, thus providing thermal protection.

When used on vehicles, this system can also protect from the secondary effects of blasts that may cause structural deformation of the vehicle's body.
