Creating Links

Anchors

Anchors are used to link to a specific section or area within a web page. For example, if a single page had several sections of content, an anchor link could be used to jump to a particular section of that content.

First you will create the anchor then create the link that corresponds to that anchor.

Instructions for Anchors

  1. Place your cursor in front of the destination location on the article.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Anchor button in the editor toolbar.
  3. Name the anchor something descriptive into text field and click the Insert button.
  4. Select the desired text for the link.
  5. Click the Insert/Edit Link button.
  6. In the bottom of the Link pop-up window in the Attributes section, select your anchor name from the Article Anchors drop-down.
  7. Click Insert.
  8. Click Save & Close to view your work.

Outside URLs

An outside link is any link that takes the user off of uah.edu. When creating links, they need to be set to open in a new web browser page or tab.

Instructions for URLs

  1. Select the desired text.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Link button.
  3. In the Link pop-up window, enter the outside url (including http://) in the URL field.
  4. In the bottom Attributes section, make sure the Target drop-down is set to Open in a new window.
  5. Click Insert.
  6. Click Save & Close and test your link.

Linking to Content within Joomla

You are able to link to pages within Joomla using Menu Items and Content. If you have the option you should always link to a Menu Item, because Menu Item links are more concise and are less likely to change in the future. If a page does not have a Menu Item, such as a specific News article, you will use a Content link.

Instructions for Menus

  1. Select the desired link text.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Link button.
  3. In the Link pop-up window, click the Menu folder in the middle Links section.
  4. Find the appropriate heading in the dropdown and expand that section. Navigate to the desired menu item making sure it ends with a "/xxxx" to verify that it is a terminal link.
  5. Click the menu item and its link will appear in the URL field at the top.
  6. In the bottom Attributes section, confirm the Target drop-down is set to Open in current window.
  7. Click Insert.
  8. Click Save & Close and test your link.

Now let's create a link to a Joomla Content page that does not have a Menu Item link associated with it.

Instructions for Content

  1. Select the desired link text.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Link button.
  3. In the Link pop-up window, click the Content folder in the middle Links section.
  4. Find the appropriate heading in the dropdown and expand that section. Navigate to the desired article making sure it ends with a "/xxxx" to verify that it is a terminal link.
  5. Click an article from the listing and its link will appear in the URL field at the top.
  6. In the bottom Attributes section, set the Target drop-down to Open in current window.
  7. Click Insert.
  8. Click Save & Close and test your link.
